2010, The BCO, and You

Dear Neighbor,

In spite of the tough economic times, last year was a tremendous success for the BCO. Through the very hard work and dedication of BCO members we were able to continue our tradition of producing well-run and well-attended events, including:
  • The Bucktown GardenWalk
  • Movies in Churchill Park Series
  • Free Members Only events at Lottie's Pub and Chaise Lounge (now the Southern)
  • The Bucktown Holiday Party Fundraiser at HotChocolate
  • Earth Day clean-ups in Ehrler & Churchill Parks
  • The Bucktown Education Forum
  • Monthly Topical Meetings at the Bucktown Library
Our paid membership increased significantly from 2008, and, to top it all off, the Education Committee was able to coordinate support for and push through a major and overdue overhaul of Pulaski Elementary School (wow!).

It really is amazing to see what can be done with focus, effort and commitment.  I thank all of you for all the hard work in 2009!  The BCO has another full slate scheduled for 2010, including a couple of new twists.  We are always looking for people to dig in and get involved, so if you want to make Bucktown a better place as much as we do, please reach out to me or any other Board member and we will get you involved.

We are now into a new, and what I believe will be another incredible year for the BCO. Thanks again, and I look forward to seeing you around the neighborhood!

Philip Edison

Friday, FEB 5th
6 - 10pm

Flatiron Building 1579 N Milwaukee

First Friday at the Flatiron

For the "Now You See It, Now You Don't" art show, the walls of the Flat Iron Arts Building will act as a giant "canvas" displaying a continuous flow of linear imagery that will turn its interior into a massive work of art. The mural, a collaboration done by a select group of Chicago artists, will be debuted, experienced and vanished, all in one evening.

This event is also the kick off of the 2010 WPB-sponsored First Fridays. Join in the fun at 1579 N. Milwaukee from 6-10pm. Explore two floors of art displayed in artists' studios and living spaces. Admission is always free, but donations are gratefully accepted. For more information, call Kevin at (708) 415-6370.

Congratulations to all the planners and volunteers who in October dished out the best Bucktown Apple Pie Contest to Date!

Another Successful BCO Education Forum!

Our 5th Annual Bucktown Education was a huge success with more than 200 people packing into the auditorium of our generous host, Burr Elementary School.

Attendees were treated to the 411 on Chicago Public Schools by the BCO's Education Chair, Steve Dillinger. His succinct presentation took the mystery out of magnet, cluster magnet and neighborhood schools, and introduced the exciting education opportunities that Bucktown parents have. He was followed by principals and leadership from each of the five Bucktown schools (Burr, CICS, Drummond, Pulaski and St. Mary's).

One highlight was what seemed to be the entire personal from both Burr and Pulaski were on hand to answer questions and show their dedication and enthusiasm for their respective schools!

If you missed out, there are two Bucktown education happenings this week: There is an open house at Burr School tonight, and CPS will unveil their exciting new plan for Pulaski on Thursday. Please click one of the hot links to the left, or scroll down for additional information.

Happy November!

HOLSTEIN HAPPENINGS

October 30, 2009
Many thanks to the contestants, volunteers and especially pie eaters who turned out on a beautiful Sunday in October to make the 5th Annual Bucktown Apple Pie Contest a rousing success.

One hundred and fourteen contestants provided 223 pies that were consumed by over 1200 people, raising some $13,000 to support Holstein Park programs.

A complete list of winners can be found at: www.bucktownapplepiecontest.com or www.friendsofholsteinpark.com

GUITAR LESSONS - Monday evenings & Saturday mornings
Holstein Park is offering free guitar lessons this fall to individuals who sign up Monday evenings for a one-hour class at 6 or 7 PM, or Saturday morning at 11 AM. Classes are limited to 4-5 students per session. For more information, contact Jeff Harms (630) 205-0768.

ZEPHYR DANCE SHOWCASE - Thurs - Sat, November 12-14
Arts Partner Zephyr Dance will be holding its fall showcase from 7:30 to 9 PM on Thursday and Friday, and again at 2 PM on Saturday afternoon in the Holstein Park Auditorium. Michelle Kranicke and Emily Stein will premiere their new original works. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for students and seniors.

BUCKTOWN BAZAAR - Sat-Sun, Nov. 28 and 29 11 AM to 5 PM
Get your holiday shopping done early. Give 70 + artists and craft professionals in Bucktown a chance to haggle over the cost of fine art. Try doing that at Target! Doors open at 11 AM. There is no admission fee.

ONLINE REGISTRATION - WINTER PROGRAMS - Monday, Nov. 30 9 AM
SAVE THIS DATE! To register for Moms & Tots, After School, sports and all other winter programs at Holstein Park you must sign up online.

The park district website is www.chicagoparkdistrict.com. [Scroll down to Holstein Park for specific programs.] THERE WILL BE NO ON-SITE REGISTRATION THIS YEAR. Online registration begins promptly at 9 AM - and most Holstein Park programs are filled quickly. To secure the spots you want, we suggest you visit the site earlier and become familiar with the sign-up routine. Have your credit card ready.

If you sign up for a program and receive a message that all the slots are filled, don't be afraid to log out, then log in and try again in a few minutes. To put it politely, the park district site is imperfect. Programs reported to be full sometimes open up miraculously a few minutes later. Good luck.

Holstein Happenings is a monthly newsletter from Friends of Holstein Park to keep you informed of what's happening in our park. We also have a new website about park activities (http://www.friendsofholsteinpark.com.) If you would like to add more names to the Holstein Happenings mailing list, send new addresses to friendsofholsteinpark@yahoo.com.
