Bucktown GardenWalk

logoBucktown Tree and GardenWalk 2010

July 10th and 11th

11 am to 5 pm

Please join us for a walk in our neighborhood and explore the 100 private and public gardens which are carefully tended by our residents.   The GuideBook containing the map and descriptions can be picked up for a $5 donation at our Presenting Sponsor, Club Lucky, 1824 W Wabansia.  Walk to a wide variety of gardens or take the free trolley to another part of our one mile square neighborhood to begin your exploration.

GardenWalk

Some gardens are packed full of flowering species, others create tranquil spaces in our hectic city.  Water features, ponds and koi, sculptures and rocks are all elements of these gardens.  The gardeners are generous to let you see their efforts, please be respectful of the plantings.  While you stroll in the neighborhood also take note of some of the other places you pass, gardens, shops, public spaces, and places to catch a bite or a beverage.  We are proud of our gardens and of our community.

TreeWalk

Last year we introduced a self Guided Tree Tour to this event.  It was so well received that it is now a permanent part of our event. This year’s TreeWalk includes 100 specific numbered tree locations, and an index of the species.  We have added a Featured Tree of The Year.  In 2010 this tree is the Catalpa.  As you walk you will be able to see many examples at different stages of life  and learn to identify the Catalpa.

logoBucktown GardenWalk 2009

The  Bucktown GardenWalk is Saturday and Sunday July 11 and 12, 2009 from 11 am to 5 pm.

Please join us!  Our 100 + urban gardens will be open from 11 am to 5 pm each day.  Starting at the Welcome Table at Club Lucky, 1824 W Wabansia or on the Free Neighborhood Trolley, your $5 donation will get you a GuideBook containing the Garden Map, and the descriptions.  The trolley route is below.

The Bucktown GardenWalk is unique in our focus on urban gardens.  Many of our Bucktown Gardeners work magic in small spaces, challenging light, water and soil conditions.  We’ve taken on rooftops, parkways and patios while some have side and back yards to garden.  We welcome you this weekend to explore our successes and our treasures as you walk around our one mile square neighborhood.  We are inspired by our neighbor’s gardens and hope that you find some bits of inspiration on your walk.

New this year is the "Bucktown TreeTour", a self guided walk focused on our tree lined streets. Volunteers have identified over 80 varieties of trees in our neighborhood.  This is a wonderful opportunity to see how trees work with our gardens.  The TreeTour will remain on the website as a resource for tree identification during all seasons in Bucktown. There will be one guided tour offered on Sunday starting at 1pm at Lotties, 1939 W Cortland. Please join us.

Returning for a second year we present “Art in the Garden” - the Plein Air Painters of Chicago who find inspiration in the neighborhood and are creating new works on the streets and in the gardens.  They will be selling these works each day on Damen Ave at Wabansia. A portion of the proceeds go to the BCO's work.

The Garden Oasis at Club Lucky is our green education venue.  Please stop by to learn about ways to improve your garden, modify your carbon footprint and enjoy the outdoors.  Master Gardeners and Arborists will be available for your questions from noon to 3pm.  Food and beverages are available and music will provide a background for this spot.  After 3pm there will be live music, presented by Club Lucky , to conclude your day in Bucktown.

Lotties, 1939 W Cortland, will have a free petting zoo on Saturday from Noon to 3pm.  On Sunday meet here at 1pm for the only Guided TreeTour.  Our local businesses have offered specials in the GuideBook, please support them as they have supported us.  Keep your eyes open for other surprises.

The gardens take many shapes and sizes - from bright pots of annuals or tropicals to parkways, front and back yards and full lots.  There is no prize to win, just the recognition of neighbors,  visitors and the amazing beauty that we create in Bucktown.

For more information about the Walk, click here.

Proceeds from the event will go towards civic beautification of the Bucktown neighborhood and towards future events. In previous years we have been able to create gardens at the Cortland/Ashland underpass, at Churchill Park on Damen Ave and at Drummond School’s Montessori Greenspace.

It is going to be a wonderful neighborhood weekend.

Sincerely,

Eva Bergant
